Welcome to Northfield

Called the cozy corner of the North Shore, Northfield is a small village of only 2.8 square miles. It is a suburb of Chicago and only 20 miles north of the Loop. Once a prairie with lagoons, the village was incorporated in 1927 and has strived to maintain its rural country landscape.

Northfield’s neighbor to the east is Winnetka, and the two towns share the same Chamber of Commerce. This helps bring the communities together and allows residents of Northfield to benefit by sharing some of the same amenities, like obtaining beach passes to Winnetka’s beaches, which are a ten-minute drive away.

The village is quieter and more private than the surrounding suburbs. This is partly due to Northfield’s zoning rules which keep commercial enterprises in the eastern part of town. In addition to tranquility, space is also important to residents of Northfield. More than half of the residential properties sit on one-acre lots.

The style and size of the homes in Northfield vary greatly. Houses range from ranch-style and two-story single-family homes to sizable million-dollar country estates. You never know what gem you will find in Northfield. It even has a house designed by Thomas Roszak made almost entirely of glass.
